Lon Barfield / Icon consequences

Icon consequences: Gamification of icon design

Small device screens means icons are again playing a part in UX. Designing icons is a skill, but everyone still has a bash at it. One way of demonstrating the challenges is to play icon consequences where strips of paper are handed round a group of people and we can see the comprehension of icons change and lose focus. We shall look at which visual ideas are enduring and easily recognisable, which are easily lost and which cause icon comprehension to go wildly awry. Skill at icon design or drawing is discouraged and although it won’t be a technique to put on your CV it promises to be fun.
